On January 18, 2018, The National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. opened to the public its newest permanent exhibit: AMERICANS.
AMERICANS strives to open our eyes to the truths behind some of the biggest events involving American Indian history in the U.S. that many of us thought we understood: the life of Pocahontas, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Trail of Tears, and of course, Thanksgiving. Then there is one additional component to AMERICANS, the #NDNsEverywhere gallery – a collection of ordinary items and pop culture images that show us how the imagery of American Indians appears in our everyday lives – cups with the Cleveland Indians mascot, a Red Man chewing tobacco sign, a box of Land O’Lakes butter, and the Ford Thunderbird logo, just to name a few.
